Who or what inspired you to pursue a career in your chosen field?

I knew I wanted to be in business from a young age. The combination of the psychology of what people wanted to buy and how you could create it and make money always fascinated me. I started my career in brand management and marketing, where I learned to “run a business” while stewarding the brand. Working on all aspects of the business fascinated me.

Can you share a defining moment that shaped your career?

A mentor of mine told me early on she saw me being more successful in a small company and while at the time it was tough to hear, she was absolutely right!

How would you describe your personal and professional values?

I believe there is enough success for all of us, and it is important to bring others along.

What advice would you give your younger self?

You can do it all, just maybe not at the same time. Put your own oxygen mask on first.

What personal or professional achievements are you most proud of?

Being the first in my family to own a business.

Balancing Life and Work

How do you manage stress and maintain a healthy work-life balance to ensure overall well-being?

I have a deep faith and prioritize spending time on my devotions and prayer first thing in the morning. If I don't, my day is not the same. I work out almost every day. I am learning to lean into how it looks different as I get older.

How do you define success?

Setting goals and achieving them, no matter how large or small. Discipline is so hard, especially in these times. to drown out the distractions and noise to achieve something is so rewarding.

Who is the one entrepreneur or business leader you consider your greatest example and inspiration? Why?

Oprah. She paved the way for so many of us. She did not fit the mold, so she redefined it through innovation and staying true to herself.

Are there any charitable organizations or community service-oriented activities that you are involved in?

I am involved in my church and have served as a volunteer in my children’s sports associations as well as served on several community boards.

I have been blessed to have great mentors along the way, and I have tried as much as possible to do the same as I have grown in my career. As a person who has been the first in my family in many circles, I strive to make sure to support young people in similar situations and mentor them with advice, resources, and skills to help make them successful. One area in particular I try to leverage is using my vast network to make connections for people who otherwise might not have met.

Can you discuss some of the key projects or initiatives you have led that stand out in your career?

One of the key initiatives I am proud of was launching a language and cultural competence service that targeted immigrant communities. This initiative not only served a business purpose but also aligned with my personal mission of bridging cultural gaps. It was about connecting the dots between the immigrant workforce and the existing community through language services, which has been immensely rewarding.

What do you see as the most significant challenges and opportunities in the field of cross-cultural communications today?

The biggest challenge is the rapid pace of globalization, which can sometimes lead to miscommunication if cultural nuances are not understood. However, this also presents an opportunity to educate businesses on the importance of cross-cultural competence. Embracing diversity and understanding cultural differences can significantly enhance a company’s market reach and operational effectiveness.

Growing up in a multicultural environment, I learned early on about the challenges and beauty of cultural diversity. This background has instilled in me a deep appreciation for different perspectives and the skills necessary to navigate and unify diverse teams. It has reinforced my belief in the power of inclusive leadership and the importance of creating a workplace where everyone feels valued.
